San Lazaro began in 2003 as a small group of young musicians inspired by the thriving Latin scene in Fitzroy, Melbourne to come together and play some Afro-Cuban Son and Salsa standards..

As time went by, extended time away from the band by various members traveling to Cuba and beyond saw new faces arrive in their places whom were often kept on, thus snowballing the group from a gentle 3 piece to a 9 headed mongrel salsa collective.

Each member of the band brought his/her own cultural heritage, aesthetic and interests to the band expanding the diversity of San Lazaro’s repertoire to incorporate elements if Jazz, Hip hop, Funk, Rock and Reggae in an unrestricted melting pot of urban latin funk.
