Ten-piece Latin Mestizo outfit San Lazaro is the act that starts the party with their horn and percussion heavy salsa funk diaspora. Easily the tightest Latin outfit to come from Australia so far, their members herald from Chilean, Spanish, Indian, Mauritian, Persian, Irish, Greek and Australian backgrounds and bring a refreshing tough, hip-hop, rock and reggae infused edge to the traditional Latin sound.

Featuring some of Melbourne’s finest musical talent, including celebrated young female percussionist and timbale player Nasrine Rahmani (Tumbarumba, The Oxo Cubans), outstanding Spanish language rapper and Conga player Sebastian Orellana and seasoned Chilean Vocalist, Franshesco Viran, San Lazaro are becoming a favorite of outdoor festivals Australia wide and with good reason.

Coupled with the congas and timbales, the driving “montunto”, played on the Columbian tiple (Oscar Poncell) is what characterizes their sound as distinctly Latin whilst the electric guitar (Steven Silk), bass (Bob Knob) and drumset (Lazare Agneskis), provide an urban grounding for sax and trumpet players Lachlan McLean and Elisha Maiyah to connect the dots with Latin and Dub Reggae influenced horn harmonies.

Fans of Ozomatli, The Cat Empire, and Manu Chao will know exactly what to do!

"San Lazaro is a world-class Latin band. They play with considerable panache, and impressive enthusiasm and exuberance."  - Rhythms magazine

(Swingo is..) "a tough, grooving piece of Afro-Latin funk from the debut album by Melbourne up and coming group of urban mestizos who - in typical Australian fashion - hail from Chilean, Spanish, Greek, Irish, Mauritian, Iranian and Indian backgrounds"  - Brent Clough, The Daily Planet. ABC National Radio

"This is the best Latin album I have heard this year. It's killer. This album often plays before we go out then when we get home, and has been the soundtrack to many wicked nights."  - Felix Reibl, The Cat Empire.

"When I hear San Lazaro I become a dancing fool" - Paul Kelly

"Every once in a long while, a band comes that has the hybrid in music that brings people from all walks of life together. We will discover with San Lazaro that in the audience, lives blend with their music which celebrates life, and makes you move and dance." - Asdru Sierra, Ozomatli.

SAN LAZARO : INDESTRUC-TIPLE!!!!
Fusing the raw Latin sounds of Descarga, Bomba, and Cumbia with an urban mix of Hip-hop, funk and reggae, this 9 headed mongrel-salsa collective is hard hitting music lovers with rude horns and heavy percussion one broken Tiple at a time...

...Even when Qantas baggage handlers, through negligence snapped the neck of the bands rarest and most vital instrument (the Columbian Tiple) San Lazaro could not be kept from rocking two of the main stages at internationally acclaimed world music Festival WOMADelaide in March this year.

Our debut album “Mestizos Urbanos” (Urban mixed races) has since picked up national distribution and is available in stores now through MRA Entertainment.

Armed with new songs, roughly bolted repair jobs and a never been seen before support act, San Lazaro invite you to the Evelyn Hotel for a true Fitzroy Latin funk party on Friday 1st of June with Neda and The Bang. NEDA, of Tumbarumba, Bomba, Mr Savona and School of Dub, rhythmically sings and tells world stories of love and enthusiasm with her rhythmic trio- Lucas Taranto (Gotye), Danny Farrugia (The Bamboos) and Tomas Fitzgerald (Enchanting singer song writer).
